2 Killed, 1 Injured In NoVA Workplace Shooting; Suspect Also Dead: Police

MANASSAS, VA – Two victims of a shooting that occurred Wednesday morning in Manassas have died, Police Chief Douglas Keen confirmed.

The shooting took place at the United Rentals facility at 9415 Wellington Rd. Police said officers first arrived on the scene around 7 a.m. to find three men with life-threatening injuries.

Two of those men are now dead. A Manassas City police press release names the two victims as 48-year-old Richard Lamont and 33-year-old Christopher Serrano.

Keen said the third victim is expected to survive.

Keen painted a more detailed picture of the scene at United Rentals during a press briefing Wednesday afternoon. According to the police chief, the suspect, 37-year-old Marvin Grant, an employee at the facility, told a coworker this morning, "Three people are going to die." Following an altercation, Grant pulled a gun from his waistband and shot three of his coworkers before fleeing the scene.

Grant was found by Virginia State Police on Route 81, according to police. After a pursuit, he pulled over at mile marker 227, near Verona, VA. He had a gun and, after a standoff with police, took his own life, Keen said.

The release says Virginia State Police did not use force during the standoff, and that Grant died around 10:30 a.m.

Keen said that police have not determined a motive for the shooting yet, and no other worker at United Rentals appeared to know the attack was coming.

The investigation is ongoing.

Schools and neighboring areas had initially been put under a shelter-in-place order as police responded to the shooting. Fox 5 reported that police initially blocked access to Jennie Dean Elementary School as part of their investigation, and the school was put on "secure the building" status.

Shelter-in-place orders were lifted later Wednesday morning after the suspect was determined to have left the area.

Manassas police announced at 10 a.m. that, "Out of an abundance of caution and coordination, Dean Elementary has decided to remain on secure the building status for the [remainder] of the school day."
