The most amazing thing happened early last week. After over five years of silence, Madison age 9, spoke for the very first time! She join our program to help develop her confidence. Mom says since Kindergarten, Madison has been absolutely quiet and has not spoken to anyone. Not even her own parents, sister, friends, or school teachers. Her counselors and martial arts instructors have been working to help build her confidence. Last week she made huge strides as she spoke her first word to the counselor, she read a paragraph to her school teacher, and she spoke the word "Aiyaa!" to her martial arts instructor.
As Madison's martial arts trainer I have to say that we are so happy to see her progress and hearing that first word was the most amazing and emotional experience. Early Friday, before classes, Madison came in and her mom told me of the victories from the week. After some encouragement, Madison requested that I close my eyes and look away. I stood there standing awkwardly for a few minutes in darkness with my hands over my eyes. Madison walked up to me and whispered "Aiyaa!". I could just feel the joy overwhelm my heart and that of her mother's. We are so proud of you Madison! Our challenge for her is now to speak at least one word to one person daily. Through accomplishments kids build confidence! Keep up the great work Madison!
