Assistance League Continues Active Support For Local Children

Nonprofit's Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Food, Clothing and Literacy Support

April has been a busy month for Assistance League of Northern Virginia (ALNV). Earlier in the month, they sponsored a Build a Child’s Library event (BACL) at Sudley Elementary school in Prince William County. Following that, there was a wonderful Golf Tournament and Luncheon Fundraiser held at Westfield’s Golf Club. Then, they packed and delivered 1900 bags of food for children in 6 Title 1 elementary schools in Northern Virginia through their Weekend Food for Kids (WFFK) program.

On April 6, after 2 weather cancellations, ALNV was finally able to host their Build A Child’s Library event at Sudley Elementary. ALNV members brought new books for each of the 611 students to choose from, and it was such fun watching them choose a book of their very own. After they chose a book, the books were stamped, “This book belongs to:” and the children were encouraged to write their name inside the cover. It’s wonderful when the students find the perfect book they are looking for or finally decide between possible choices with the help of ALNV volunteers or their teachers and classmates.

Westfield’s Golf Club was the site for ALNV’s 2nd Annual Golf Tournament and Luncheon fundraiser. Golfers began the morning with a continental breakfast and a putting contest. After that, they headed out to a shotgun start and played 18 holes of captain’s choice. As they finished up their rounds, the golfers headed back and joined ALNV members and guests for a delicious hot buffet luncheon, raffle prizes, silent auction and the announcement of the winners of the golf tournament. Everyone had a wonderful time and were already talking about next year’s event.

Finally, the monthly Weekend Food for Kids packing event took place at Dominion Energy. ALNV partners with Dominion Energy to pack nonperishable foods for children experiencing food insecurity. The 1900 bags of food are delivered to 6 local schools where a portion of the bags are given to children each Friday to take home for the weekend. This month, ALNV was joined by volunteers from HITT Contracting and Nativity Parish.
