“The Avengers” Crushes Competition

"The Avengers" has obliterated box office records and will most likely continue to do so in the weeks ahead, despite large-scale competition.

Over the past two weeks, “The Avengers” has been demolishing the box office and crushing previous records.

Making money at a blistering pace, faster than that of even “The Dark Knight,” the blockbuster superhero movie now will more than likely be the highest grossing film of the year. In just 10 days, the movie has earned an incredible $373 million domestically in the United States, which is almost as much as the $381 million that made “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” the top movie of 2011.

It’s clear that “The Avengers” will have carrying power for the coming weeks, given the estimated $103 million it made in its second weekend. But will it take first place at the box office again in its third week?

“The Avengers” certainly has considerable competition arriving in the next week, but I believe that it will take the top spot at the box office again. First, it faces Sacha Baron Cohen’s new comedy, The Dictator, which is being released on Wednesday, and on Friday both “Battleship” and “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” will arrive.

If any of these films have any chance of dethroning The Avengers, it would be what will surely be considered the most mind-numbing film of the summer: Battleship. The movie is centered around a Navy Fleet that has to fight a group of aliens, and it’s based on the board game of the same name. Its special effects look excellent, borrowing a page from the “Transformers” series, but its story sounds absolutely ridiculous. “Battleship” ought to be able to make money, but given that it’s going up against the juggernaut that “The Avengers” has become, and will continue to be, that isn’t going to happen.

The other two movies opening this weekend will probably do as well as “Battleship.” There’s been positive buzz and reviews for “The Dictator,” and there’s wide gender appeal of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.”

“The Avengers” so big that not only will it continue dominating the box office, it could even add momentum to the next superhero movie coming this summer. “The Dark Knight Rises,” the conclusion of the Batman trilogy, which will arrive July 20 and sure to crowd movie theaters again.

“The Avengers” is now playing at and Manassas 4 Cinemas.
