MANASSAS, VA—A boy briefly escaped custody after being arrested for trying to break into a Manassas home Saturday but was found hiding in a trash dumpster, according to Prince William County Police. The 17-year-old was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, petit larceny and escape without force.

Around 10:45 a.m., police arrived at a residence in the 7600 block of Monitor Court to investigate a reported burglary in progress. A caller said two unknown males were trying to force open the back door of a neighbor's house with a crowbar but fled when he yelled at them.

Police found one of them and took him to the Juvenile Services Office at 9540 Center Street for booking but afterward, while being loaded into a cruiser for transport to the detention center, he broke free and fled. Additional officers were summoned to help in the search, and the boy was found shortly thereafter hiding inside a dumpster at the nearby Pennington Traditional School.
