Charcoal Grill Ashes Spark Manassas House Fire: Authorities

MANASSAS, VA — A home caught fire on Sunday night in Manassas after improperly disposed ashes from a charcoal grill ignited, according to the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue.

No injuries were reported in the blaze. Authorities said the house sustained moderate damage, displacing two people.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Firefighters learned of the blaze in the 10500 block of River Run Court around 11 p.m. on Sunday. A neighbor called 911 to report that a nearby home was on fire.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they saw a fire based on the front deck that was extending into the home, fire department officials said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

"Charcoal ashes from a grill can remain hot enough to ignite a fire up to 48 hours. Ashes should never be placed in a paper bag or other combustible container," the fire department said in a news release. "If possible, spread the ashes out along the ground in an area away from combustibles. Never dispose of ashes in your home or on a combustible surface."
