Wexton defeated then-incumbent Barbara Comstock in 2018 by a 9 point margin. Before 2018, the congressional seat had been held by a Republican since 1980.

"On the Board of Supervisors, I've fought for lower taxes, limited government, and have a proven record of winning in deep blue northern Virginia," Lawson wrote on Facebook as she announced her candidacy. "Next year, we need to take back Congress from Pelosi and The Squad."
