Corey Stewart 'Giving Away an AR-15 for Christmas'

Prince William County's chairman of the Board of Supervisors also is running for governor, and he's using the drawing as a fundraising tool.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — This certainly qualifies as an unorthodox method of political campaigning, but Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart is anything but orthodox.

That's why it's not all that surprising the Republican gubernatorial candidate is offering those who contribute to his campaign a chance to win an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

There's a picture of the rifle on campaign material, over which Stewart says "Giving Away an AR-15 for Christmas."

The rifle is featured prominently on the registration form, as well, where suggested donations range from $50-$5,000.

The AR-15 is the nation's most popular rifle. Gun-control advocates long have sought restrictions on the weapon, while the National Rifle Association has long defended it. The weapon has been used in several mass shootings both in the United States and elsewhere.

Stewart was President-elect Donald Trump's Virginia campaign chairman until being fired in October following a protest stunt outside Republican National Committee headquarters in D.C.
