Daughters of the American Revolution Holds Annual Flag Retirement

Local Boy Scout Troop Assists DAR in Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony

The Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter, NSDAR, conducted their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony April 21st in Manassas with the help of Boy Scout Troop 1366 and the Young Women of the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also participating were members of the Colonel William Grayson Chapter, National Society Sons of the American Revolution.

“We have come together to dispose of flags which are no longer serviceable,” Melyssa Stratton-Webb, Regent for the local DAR chapter, stated. “These flags have served as a reminder of our nation and those who have defended our freedom. They have served us well.”

United States flags that are torn or too worn to fly are retired with dignity and respect. U.S. flags should never be thrown away in the trash. The retirement ceremony requires that each flag be disassembled, rendering it no longer a flag, before placing in a fire.
