The Merrimac Farm Chapter of Virginia's Master Naturalist Program will offer a course from March 8 though October 28 2012. There are both lecture and field classes, with an emphasis on being outside. The class schedule is HERE and requirements for Certified Master Naturalists are below.

The program fee is $200 per participant, payable when you submit your application. You must be 18 years old by the start of the training session to participate.

Click HERE to download the electronic/email application (preferred) and here to download the print version. Email to naturalist@pwconserve.org or mail to the Prince William Conservation Alliance, PO Box 6351, Woodbridge, VA 22195.

Enrollment is open until class maximum of 12 participants is reached.

To become a Certified Master Naturalist, a trainee must:

  1. Complete the basic training course;
  2. Pass a take-home test at the end of the training course;
  3. Complete at least 8 hours/year of advanced training, approved by the Merrimac Farm Chapter;
  4. Volunteer for at least 40 hours/year for a project approved by the Merrimac Farm Chapter.

Most classes are held at Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area, 15020 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville 20181.

Everyone has 12 months from the last day of basic training to complete the advanced training and volunteer requirements for certification.

Master Naturalist Certification is valid through the calendar year following the year in which the requirements were completed. To maintain certification, volunteers complete an additional 8 hours of advanced training and 40 hours of service annually.

Participants are expected to cover all the material of the course. No more than two classes may be missed. All missed sessions must be made up by attending the appropriate, approved class within 12 months of the completion of the training.

Virginia Master Naturalist programs are open to all, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status.  If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact John Rohm at 540.295.5826 between 8 AM and 5 PM (TDD number 1.800.828.1120) to discuss accommodations five days prior to the event.
