A basement fire quickly roared out of control and left a home gutted early Monday in Nokesville, according to Prince William fire officials.

NOKESVILLE, VA—A basement fire quickly roared out of control and left a home gutted early Monday in the 10000 block of Windy Ridge Lane, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue. A family of three adults and two children were alerted by smoke alarms and escaped unscathed.

Shortly before 3 a.m., crews responded to a reported house fire that the occupant found from smoke coming from the restaurant. Firefighters found that the fire had spread throughout the structure upon arrival, and an equipment malfunction forced them to momentarily retreat as the fire continued to rage.

The home ultimately was destroyed, and an investigation is underway.
