I-66 Traffic Alert: New Lane Designations for Rush Hour at Route 28

New exit lane expected to help make stretch of Interstate 66 less congested, according to Virginia Department of Transportation.

MANASSAS, VA — A particularly tricky, congested and dangerous stretch of I-66 is now less so — at least that's what the Virginia Department of Transportation hopes.

We're talking about the area where westbound I-66 drivers exit to northbound Route 28 during the morning rush hour.

From 6 a.m.-9:30 a.m. during the work week, drivers headed for Route 28 will have a dedicated exit lane. I-66 overhead signs will direct drivers to the right and direct through drivers to the other three lanes.

Drivers probably already have noticed the changes.

According to the release, since 2013 there were 54 crashes reported along the stretch involving 135 vehicles — 47 of those crashes happened during good weather.
