Lady Raiders Invade Eagles' Nest

The Stonewall girls basketball team defeated the girls from Osbourn in a Friday night district battle.

The Osbourn girls basketball team hosted the Lady Raiders from Stonewall Jackson Friday night in a district battle between two Manassas teams.

Osbourn has a very young team that is still growing and developing with each game, while Stonewall has a very solid team that is one of the better teams in the area. In last night’s game, Stonewall was able to exploit the inexperience of the Lady Eagles and the Raiders took an extremely lopsided victory as they beat Osbourn, 100-21.

Stonewall’s girls put an extreme amount of pressure on the Osbourn offense           from the opening tip, rarely allowing the Eagles to  get the ball across half court.

Stonewall created a ton of turnovers in the first half and  did a great job of converting the turnovers into points. The Lady Raiders had a very significant size advantage over the younger, smaller Osbourn team.  Stonewall led the Eagles 51-2 at the end of the first half.

Stonewall slowly backed away from using the full court press at the start of the second half, but as soon as Osbourn got the ball to half court, the Lady Raiders just swarmed in on them making it extremely difficult for Osbourn to even get off a shot.

The Lady Eagles were able to do a much better job in the second half of at least getting themselves open for shots from time to time. Osbourn was able to score 19 points in the second half after scoring only two points in the entire first half, totaling 21 points for the game.

The game was completely dominated by the Stonewall defense. The turnovers the Raiders were able to cause led to the majority of the points that Stonewall scored.

It was good to see that after Osbourn was held to only two first half points that they came out in the second half and continued to battle despite the enormous deficit.

That is definitely a good sign because if the Lady Eagles can continue to play with that determination, they definitely have the potential to be a strong contender in the coming years.

The leading performers for Stonewall were:

Joy Caracciolo and Ryan Jordan who each scored 24 points

Amanda Hinton with 17 points

Necole Sterling with 16 points

Danielle Burns with 11 points

The leading performer for the Osbourn Lady Eagles was Mikal Johnson who scored a team-high 9 points.

Stonewall’s girls improved their record to 8-4 with the victory while the Lady Eagles drop to 4-12 on the season.

The Osbourn girls will be back in action next Wednesday as they travel across town to Osbourn Park to play at 7:30. Stonewall’s girls are back in action next Tuesday as they travel to Battlefield for a game beginning at 6 pm.
