Lane Closures Come To I-66 Outside The Beltway This Week
Several lanes of I-66 outside the Capital Beltway will be shut down at different times for mobile maintenance, lighting, and utility work.

GAINESVILLE, VA — Drivers who use Intestate 66 outside of the Capital Beltway can expect a variety of lane closures and delays this week. Construction crews will be conducting maintenance and other projects as part of the ongoing "Transform 66 Outside The Beltway" project.
The Virginia Department of Transportation noted that the lane closures could have a significant impact to traffic in the area. Additionally, officials noted that construction work is subject to change based on weather and scheduling.
Here are the lane closures to know for I-66 outside the beltway this week, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation:

- Route 29 (Lee Highway), Gainesville
- I-66 east and west between Route 15 and Compton Road
- Construction will take place daily through Dec. 29.
- One lane of eastbound traffic will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., one lane of westbound traffic will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lighting and utility work.
- I-66 east and west between Route 29 and I-495
- Construction will take place from Monday, Dec. 27 through Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Two lanes will be closed for a mobile maintenance operation.
- I-66 east and west between Route 15 and Compton Road
- Route 234 Business (Sudley Road), Manassas
- I-66 east and west between Route 15 and Compton Road
- Construction will take place daily through Dec. 29.
- One lane of eastbound traffic will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., one lane of westbound traffic will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lighting and utility work.

The "Transform 66 Outside the Beltway" project began in late 2017. The goal was to alleviate congestion and offer more traffic options in the 22.5 mile stretch from I-495 to Gainesville. According to their website, officials expect construction to be complete in late 2022.
