The grass doesn’t have to be greener on the other side. With proper lawn care you can have the best looking grass on your block and it really isn’t all that hard either!
If your yard is already a bit out of sorts then it might take a bit of work to get it looking fabulous again; but once you do, then it will be easy maintenance from there on out.
Basic Lawn Mowing Guidelines

Not only is long grass unsightly, but it is unhealthy for the plants as well. The longer the grass is, the more shaded the root is which prohibits the healthy green growth. Cutting tall grass can damage it so you want to only be cutting about the top third of the blade of grass at a time. You can easily accomplish this by mowing approximately once a week. If your lawn is already a bit out of control then adjust your mower’s blade height and take several passes to reduce the length of the grass gradually.
Do not mow going in only one direction. To lessen the stress of mowing you can mow both up and down and then back and forth. If you are on a hill, always mow across and not up and down the hill.

Cutting the grass when it is wet can clog up your lawn mower and it also leaves clumps of wet grass behind that can kill your grass. Wait until the grass is dry before mowing after a rain.
Watering the Lawn
If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain you might not have to worry about it but many people find that in order to grow perfectly green grass they need to water regularly. You can water the lawn manually or with an automated system like sprinklers or irrigation systems.
The best time of day to water your lawn is between 5 and 10 AM. The amount of water your lawn needs will vary depending on the type of grass and the type of soil you have.
Controlling Weeds
Weeds can look like flowers or they can even look like different types of grass. If you suddenly find yourself with a thick patch of green plants that look nothing like your normal grass, then you have weeds!
Seeds that promote weed growth are transplanted by the wind, birds, animals, mowers and even by simply walking across your lawn. The best time to catch a weed is when it’s young. If you inspect your lawn daily you can pull weeds as soon as they pop up.
Having a healthy lawn to begin with is the best defense against weeds but if you find an infestation on your hands, there are commercial herbicides that can be used to eradicate them. Be sure to read each label carefully to ensure that you are killing the right kind of weed.
