Local Women Participate in Defense Class

On Wednesday, 12 local women participated in the first Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Systems Basic Physical Defense Program for Women offered in the City of Manassas.  This class is being offered by the City of Manassas Police Department in an effort to expand crime prevention services to the local community. In the coming months the Department will also offer R.A.D. for Seniors and Advanced Self Defense for Women.

Being the victim of a violent crime is a harrowing experience.  Being prepared with carefully chosen self-defense tactics, techniques and strategies can make all the difference between life and death.  The R.A.D. Systems of Self-Defense provides a holistic approach to rape and abduction prevention and self-empowerment.  This course delivers the knowledge, physical training and practice that are safety necessities.  The City of Manassas Police Department believes that every woman has an inherent right to the information and skills learned through the R.A.D. Program and is determined to provide both to the women in the community.

“This R.A.D. class was amazing.  The nice thing was the collaboration between the various police departments: (the City of) Manassas, Vienna and Falls Church. And, I’ve learned so much.  I feel like, if I was in a situation where I felt unsafe, I would beable to defend myself,” said one class participant.  “My daughter took the class as well and sheis going away to college in a year. I feel like she is going to know what to do if she is ever in a dangerous situation.”


“This was a huge success for the women in the program and for the City of Manassas Police Department,” said Adrienne Helms, class instructor.  “This could not have happened if not for the dedication of our students and support from other agencies and R.A.D. Systems.  I am so proud of the women who completed this first class and cannot wait to share R.A.D. with other women and seniors in the community.”

To ensure the success and longevity of these vital programs, the City of Manassas Police Department is partnering with local sponsors to help provide necessary items.  Local sponsors provide financial support for this program; and any level of sponsorship is welcomed and appreciated.

With one instructor certified to teach the course at the City of Manassas Police Department, the support of neighboring Police agencies and independent instructors is crucial.  Instructors need not be from law enforcement.  For more information on becoming a R.A.D.
