Manassas Man Arrested After Stealing Donations From Man: Police

MANASSIS, VA — A 22-year-old Manassas man is in custody after being arrested and charged with multiple crimes after police said he stole money from a man collecting donations outside a local Walmart and then injured the man in the process of trying to get away.

David Gonzalez-Batres was charged with malicious wounding and petit larceny on Wednesday, more than two months after the incident occurred outside of the Walmart store in the 9400 block of Liberia Avenue in Manassas, police announced Thursday. According to the Prince William County Police Department, Gonzalez-Batres grabbed a bag of money from a 65-year-old man who was collecting donations outside the store on Nov. 8.

Police said after grabbing the money, Gonzalez-Batres got into a vehicle. The victim attempted to get into the passenger side of the car and was partially inside when Gonzalez-Batres began to drive away, police said. The victim was dragged for a short distance before he was able to free himself from the vehicle as the suspect drove away.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Gonzalez-Batres and arrested him on Wednesday, police said. Gonzalez-Batres is scheduled to appear in court on the charges at a later date.
