The accident happened around 2:18 a.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 64, claiming the life of a 21-year-old man.
HENRICO COUNTY, VA — An early-morning crash in Henrico County has claimed the life of a Manassas man. Giovanni Gonzalez, 21, died after succumbing to injuries sustained in a three-vehicle car accident on Interstate 64 near the 203 mile marker, according to Virginia State Police.
At about 2:18 a.m. Aug. 26, Gonzalez was traveling eastbound on I-64 in a 2008 Nissan Maxima when he lost control, veering right and striking a guard rail and an arrow board sign in the right lane. Gonzalez veered left before finally coming to a stop in the median. An adult male driving an Audi sedan stopped in the left travel lane with his hazard lights on to help Gonzalez, who was outside his vehicle to retrieve his dog, police said.
Meanwhile, a third vehicle — a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by an adult female was approaching the accident scene when it struck the arrow board sign, which had ended up in the middle travel lane after initial impact with Gonzalez’s vehicle. As a result, the arrow board sign struck the Audi and Gonzalez, who was still standing outside his vehicle.
