One Dead After I-66 Crash

One person is dead after a crash Tuesday on westbound I-66 that involved a tractor trailer.

One person is dead after a crash Tuesday on westbound I-66 that involved a tractor trailer. 

The two-vehicle crash happened around 12:30 p.m. in Fairfax County  on I-66 westbound just east of Manassas near the welcome center at mile marker 49.

According to Virginia State Police, A 2004 Chevrolet Astro was traveling westbound on the local interstate when it struck the rear of a 2007 flatbed tractor-trailer, also traveling westbound on I-66.

The driver of the Chevrolet Astro died at the scene, authorities said. The individual was wearing a seatbelt. No one else was in the vehicle.

The driver of the flatbed tractor-trailer was not injured and there were no other passengers in the truck.

Virginia State Police are still in the process of notifying the next of kin. The crash remains under investigation.

According to Virginia Department Transportation spokeswoman Joan Morris, the crash closed two lanes of 66 west near the rest area, creating major backups similar to rush hour conditions heading towards Manssas around lunchtime Tuesday.
