Pedestrian Killed In Manassas Crash, Driver Charged With DWI: Police
A pedestrian died after being hit by an intoxicated driver on Saturday night in Manassas, the city's police department said.
MANASSAS, VA — A pedestrian was killed in a crash with an intoxicated driver on Saturday in Manassas, the city's police department said.
Authorities did not identify the pedestrian by name in a report on Monday. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver, 47-year-old Jose Rafael Lizama, was arrested after the crash. He is charged with one count of driving while intoxicated.

Lizama is being held without bond at the Prince William Adult Detention Center. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 24.
If convicted of the current charge, Lizama could face up to 1 year in jail, based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday in the 8900 block of Center Street. Investigators believe Lizama was driving a white 2008 Ford E-350 that struck a pedestrian. First responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
"Investigators are still reviewing, collecting, and processing the evidence to determine the details of the incident," the Manassas City Police Department said in a report. "We will not be releasing further information on the case at this time as the investigation is ongoing. The Manassas City Police is seeking any video footage that may have been taken of the incident."

Virginia's drunken driving laws are among the harshest in the nation, the Departmnt of Motor Vehicles says on its website. If a driver is convicted for a first DUI offense, the minimum punishment includes a $250 fine and a revocation of the driver's license for one year. A DUI conviction can also require the installation of an ignition interlock device.
