Over any amount of time, caregiving can be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Caregiver burnout can happen in any caregiver-patient relationship, but the risk is heightened in times of increased stress. A caregiver may experience hopelessness, overwhelming anxiety, changes in sleep patterns, or difficulty coping with everyday tasks. Although caregiving is a significant responsibility, it shouldn’t wholly overtake and overwhelm an individual’s life.

Caregiving does not wait for ideal conditions. The duty continues during and throughout a crisis and most likely becomes more challenging in public health emergencies. Where there are pre-existing pressures, a pandemic like COVID-19 can highlight and heighten these vulnerabilities and add new stressors and challenges for caregivers, including disrupted access to services and support.

Despite the unchartered nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, caregivers in our community remained a valuable constant for their loved ones. They are constantly juggling their lives to stay physically and mentally healthy as they perform their crucial role.

During the November 9 meeting, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted to observe Family Caregivers Month in recognition of the many caregivers in our community and urges county residents to contact known caregivers and thank them for their dedication and service.
