School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day Coming To Prince William
In the history of crossing guards in Prince William County, there have been no deaths or serious injuries of any child at a school crossing.
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors designated Feb. 12 as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County. The county has 94 school crossing guards who work at the county's public elementary and middle schools.
In the 55-year history of crossing guards in Prince William County, there have been no deaths or serious injuries of any child at any school crossing in the county. In the past school year, crossing guards conducted 29,412 safe crossings for school children in the county, according to the Prince William County Police Department.
The department's Crossing Guard Section handles safety for public schools in Prince William County, but not in the cities of Manassas and Manasas Park.

Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is part of Virginia Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program. The state suggests that schools or students thank crossing guards in person and nominate them for Virginia's Most Outstanding Crossing Guard Award.
In Prince William County, crossing guards are part-time positions. They must be available to work from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The county is currently accepting applications for crossing guards. The starting salary is $13.94 per hour. Uniforms are provided. Applicants must pass the free crossing guard training provided by the Prince William County Police Department’s Crossing Guard Section.
