SOL Standardized Tests: How Prince William County Schools Performed
Prince William County Public Schools saw slight increases in writing, math, and science SOL scores, state officials announced.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — SOL scores rose slightly in several subject areas for Prince William County Schools. Scores held steady in two other subjects.
The Virginia Department of Education released Standards of Learning standardized test results for 2023 Thursday. Statewide results show overall rates remaining the same for reading and writing, increases for math and science and one percentage point decrease for history.
However, the Virginia Department of Education raised concerns about significant numbers of students in the "low proficient" level that may have failed before passing cut scores were lowered between 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. Achievement gaps also remain among certain student groups.

Prince William County Schools had a 75 percent pass rate for reading in 2023, the same as last year. History and social science score were also unchanged with a 70 percent pass rate.
Writing, math, and science scores all rose for Prince William County students. Math scores saw the sharpest increase from 67 to 71 percent of students passing the standardized tests.

Achievement gaps remain for many students in Prince William County and throughout Virginia. Economically disadvantaged students, English language learners, and students with disabilities consistently scored lower than other students.
English language learners saw improvements in several areas compared to previous years. Science, math, history, and writing scores all improved in 2023. Reading scores declined slightly.
Economically disadvantaged students saw similar changes in results. Their average scores increased in all areas except for reading. Their passing rates were still lower than other students who were not economically disadvantaged.
Students with disabilities saw improved passing rates in reading, writing, math, and science. The history passing rate declined in 2023.
