Stonewall Jackson Monument Vandalized At Manassas National Battlefield Park: NPS

Cleanup is underway for a monument to Confederate general Stonewall Jackson that was vandalized Tuesday night at Manassas Battlefield Park.

MANASSAS, VA — Cleanup is underway for a monument to Confederate general Stonewall Jackson that was vandalized with paint sometime Tuesday night at Manassas National Battlefield Park, according to the National Park Service. Found early Wednesday morning, the monument's base was defaced with white paint and the word "Dead!" was written in gold spray paint. Anyone with information is urged to call 301-714-2235.

The monument, built in 1940, was built at the site where Jackson was tagged with his nickname after the Battle of First Manassas July 21. 1861. Several such incidents have affected a handful of Confederate statues in Virginia in the aftermath of the early August clash in Charlottesville between white nationalist groups and counter protesters that left one person, Heather Heyer, dead. She was among the counter protesters.
