Update: Driver Charged After Fatal Crash With Train In Haymarket
The man who was driving a truck that was hit by a train in Haymarket last week has been charged with reckless driving, authorities said.
HAYMARKET, VA — The man who was driving a truck that was hit by a train in Haymarket last week has been charged with reckless driving, authorities said. Investigators said the driver ignored a stop sign before driving onto the train tracks.
A passenger in the truck, 26-year-old Emerson Lisandro Martinez Mejia of Manassas, died at the scene.
Police identified the driver as 42-year-old Jose Odelino Gonzalez Valdez of Manassas Park. He suffered serious injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said.

On Wednesday, authorities charged Gonzalez Valdez with one count of reckless driving. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.
The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 near Kapp Valley Way and James Madison Highway in Haymarket. Investigators believe the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was driving northbound on Kapp Valley Way when he ignored a stop sign before the railroad crossing.

When the truck started to cross over the tracks, a cargo train hit it. The force of the collision caused the truck to leave the roadway, authorities said. It finally stopped several hundred feet away from the crash site.
