Veterans Day 2017: Artsy Salute At Hylton Center

One of the more artsy Veterans Day celebrations is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.

MANASSAS, VA — One of the more artsy Veterans Day celebrations is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle. For the third consecutive year, the free event dubbed "Celebrating Veterans and the Arts" will have a wide variety of exhibits and workshops.

Also displayed will be artwork by veterans. Following the event, a "patriotic concert" will be held at 4 p.m. by the American Festival Pops All-Stars. Its free for veterans and their family, as well as those on active duty. The price is $15 for the general public. Here's a schedule of the events:

1 p.m.Chamber Music by the Youth Orchestras of Prince William and String Quartet from the Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra - Start out the afternoon by browsing artwork and community information tables, while enjoying beautiful chamber music.

2 p.m. — “War and Recovery” Lecture Presentation by Martin J. Cervantez, Master Sergeant, USA (Ret.) - Learn more about the artist and his artwork, especially how his work speaks to his experience as a Veteran, artist, and storyteller.

3 p.m. — “Instrument Petting Zoo” presented by the Potomac Arts Academy - Learn about different instruments through a hands-on, interactive experience!

2 p.m. — Dominion Energy Veterans Guitar Workshop Presentation - Watch our guitar class perform some favorites - or, better yet, join us! All levels of guitar playing experience welcome. Bring your own guitar or borrow one of ours.

3 p.m. — “Salute to Veterans” Pre-Performance Discussion by Bryan Kidd, USN, MUCF (Ret.) & Arranger-in-Residence, American Festival Pops Orchestra - An audience favorite! Gain knowledge and insight about the concert you're about to enjoy and ask questions.

Community Organizations share information about resources, services, and support for Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers. Daisy Troop 90042 leads “thank you” card-making project for distribution to local Veterans.

Merchant Hall
4 p.m. — “Salute to Veterans” Concert by the American Festival Pops All-Stars, featuring Veteran musicians and guest artists Darden Purcell and Mason Jazz Voices, vocalist Jim Van Slyke, and 14 year-old tap-dancing talent Luke Spring.
