GAINESVILLE, VA — A Gainesville woman was charged after authorities said she fatally hit a man in a crosswalk with her minivan.

The pedestrian, 72-year-old Chyi Mao, died at the scene of the crash on Friday morning.

The Prince William County Police Department identified the woman as 77-year-old Paula Ann Buresh. Buresh is charged with one count of failing to stop for a pedestrian.

Buresh's court date is pending and she was released on a summons on Tuesday, authorities said. She could face a fine of up to $500, based on the punishment outlined in the Virginia code.

The crash occurred around 7 a.m. on Friday at the intersection of Somerset Crossing Drive and Forkland Way in Gainesville. Investigators said Mao was using the crosswalk on Somerset Crossing Drive when a 2011 Honda Odyssey hit him.

First responders arrived and pronounced Mao deceased, according to the police report.

Authorities noted that the driver remained at the scene of the crash. Investigators believe that speed, drug use, and alcohol use were not factors in the crash.
