About 1,000 NoVA Jobs Will Be Gone By End Of 2018

Several companies in northern Virginia have said layoffs will take effect just before or after the New Year. Here's the breakdown.

The New Year is usually a time for reflection, a fresh start and new goals, but for some in northern Virginia it will unfortunately mean layoffs. Several companies have announced that workers would lose their jobs before the start of 2019 or at some point during the new year because of downsizing or company closures. There are more than 1,000 scheduled layoffs set for that timeframe with most taking place in the last quarter of 2018.

Among some of the biggest layoffs are DH Leesburg Managment, LLC in Leesburg with 401 job cuts, and NetCentrics Corporation in Alexandria and Arlington with 149 job losses. Kmart, a part of Sears which recently declared bankruptcy after years of financial challenges, is set to shed 83 positions when its Annandale store closes at the end of the year.

Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased in July to 3.1 percent and was down 0.6 percentage point from a year ago. In July, the labor force expanded by 7,790, which was the sixth consecutive monthly increase, and at 4,356,623, set a new record high, according to the Virginia Employment Commission. Household employment increased by 12,146, which was the seventh consecutive monthly increase, and at 4,223,275, also set a new record high. The number of unemployed continued to drop, declining by 4,356 to 133,348. Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate continues to be below the national rate, which was down 0.1 percentage point in July to 3.9 percent.
