12 Virginia Hospitals Among 250 Best In America: Healthgrades
Hospitals in Virginia were ranked among the top 100 and 250 hospitals in the nation and were recognized with specialty awards.

VIRGINIA — Twelve hospitals in Virginia were ranked among the 250 best in the country in a new ranking from Healthgrades, a marketplace to help people find doctors and hospitals.
Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complications rates for 31 of the most common health care conditions and procedures at 4,500 U.S. hospitals for its 2023 America’s Best Hospitals ranking. This year’s awards recognize overall clinical excellence and the top-ranked hospitals for 18 specialty care among 32 eligible states.

- America’s 100 Best Hospitals (top 2 percent)
- America’s 250 Best Hospitals (top 5 percent)
Virginia hospitals included in the 100 best were Inova Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg, Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Parham Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Retreat Doctors' Hospital in Richmond and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach.
Virginia hospitals included in the 250 best were Inova Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, Johnston-Willis Hospital in North Chesterfield and St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond.

Specialty awards were given to the ranking hospitals, as well. In Northern Virginia, Inova Alexandria Hospital also received a 2023 Stroke Care Excellence Award, while Inova Loudoun Hospital received a 2023 Critical Care Excellence Award.
Reston Hospital Center received America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award, America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery Award, America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care Award, America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Surgical Excellence Award and Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award in 2023.
Other ranking hospitals in Virginia received multiple specialty awards, as well.
Healthgrades said in a news release that the awards help consumers choose a doctor or hospital based on the criteria that matters most to them, including compatibility, relevant experience and quality of care, at a time of heightened awareness of the importance of taking care of themselves.
A recent Healthgrades survey found 64 percent of consumers are more concerned about their health now than before the pandemic. More than half (57 percent) are more concerned today than before the pandemic about the quality of care provided by hospitals and their doctors.
Healthgrades said that if all hospitals performed at the level of the top 250 hospitals, 160,615 lives would have been saved.
