ALEXANDRIA, VA — With July 4th just around the corner, it's time to plan which Fourth of July fireworks and festivities you can attend this Independence Day.

Alexandria normally holds its birthday celebration and Independence Day festivities after Fourth of July. This year, the event falls on Saturday, July 13. We've also rounded up fireworks shows and other Fourth of July events happening near Alexandria.

What: USA/Alexandria Birthday Celebration

Where: Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison Street Alexandria, VA

When: July 13, 6 p.m.-10 p.m.

Alexandria celebrates its 270 birthday and America’s 243rd birthday in one big celebration. Guests can enjoy a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, patriotic birthday cake and food vendors. The event culminates in a fireworks show over the Potomac River at 9:30 p.m.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 6 p.m. - Performance by DJ Steven Swann
  • 7:30 p.m. - Town crier announces Mayor Justin Wilson; poetry reading by Alexandria Poet Laureate KaNikki Jakarta; acknowledgments
  • 8 p.m. - Distribution of birthday cupcakes by members of City Council
  • 8:30 p.m. - Performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra
  • 9:30 p.m. - Grand finale fireworks display, featuring Tchaikovsky's “1812 Overture” with cannon support by the Presidential Salute Battery of the 3d United States Infantry Regiment (“The Old Guard”)

The following road closures will begin at 7 a.m. and reopen at 11 p.m.:

  • Unit block of Oronoco St.
  • 500 block of North Union Street
  • 100 block of Pendleton Street (limited access in 200 block)
  • 100 to 200 block of Madison Street
There will be restricted parking in the 600 to 800 block of North Fairfax Street.

In the case of inclement weather, the fireworks show only will be rescheduled for Sunday, July 14 at 9:30 p.m.

What: National Independence Day Parade

Where: Constitution Ave. NW from 7th Street to 17th Street NW, Washington, DC

When: July 4, 11:45 a.m. - 2 p.m.

(Via the National Park Service's website): "Marching bands, fife and drum corps, floats, military units, giant balloons, equestrian, drill teams and more celebrate Independence Day in this patriotic, flag-waving, red, white and blue celebration of America's birthday!"

What: A Capitol Fourth Concert

Where: West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC

When: July 4, 8 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

(Via the National Park Service's website): "Co-sponsored by the National Park Service and the National Symphony Orchestra, A Capital Fourth honors our nation's 243rd birthday with an all-star salute of the best in American entertainment. Gates open at 3 p.m." Performers this year include John Stamos, Vanessa Williams, Carole King, Sesame Street, the National Symphony Orchestra, and many more.

What: DC Fireworks Display

Where: National Mall, Washington, DC

When: July 4, 9:07 p.m. - 9:27 p.m.

(Via the National Park Service's website): "Independence Day culminates with a spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall. The fireworks will be launched from West Potomac Park and will be visible from many locations throughout D.C. and Northern Virginia. The fireworks will be cancelled in case of heavy rain, thunderstorms or high winds."

What: An American Celebration at Mount Vernon

Where: George Washington's Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Hwy, Mount Vernon, VA

When: July 4, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Spend Fourth of July at George Washington's home with daytime fireworks, a performance by the National Concert Band, a ceremony for new citizens, military re-enactments and a wreathlaying ceremony. George and Martha Washington will be on hand to greet visitors, and free birthday cake will be served. The event is rain or shine. The price is included in admission to Mount Vernon.

What: Independence Fireworks at Mount Vernon

Where: George Washington's Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Hwy, Mount Vernon, VA

When: June 28-29, 6 p.m.-9:45 p.m.

This fireworks show is synchronized with patriotic music. Tickets are $36 with a mansion tour or $30 without a tour for adults. Kids tickets are $26 with a mansion tour and $20 without.
