Alexandria City School Board Finalizes Budget Plan Ahead Of Thursday Vote
The Alexandria City School Board restored several items to the budget it will vote on this week.
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria City School Board has finalized the budget proposal they’ll vote on this Thursday, but not after a late legal warning caused some upheaval in their discussion, according to reports.
The board had several items to consider adding back to their budget going into their meeting Tuesday night. The Alexandria Brief reported that the board voted to restore two Afghan Family Liaison positions in two schools, with funding coming from cuts to travel and other budget allotments.
The board also voted to add one itinerant Advanced Academic Services teacher and allocate money to restoring the district's contract with Communities in Schools, an organization that fights absenteeism by providing outside support to students.

Members also approved funding for a consultant study of central office staffing.
According to the Alexandria Brief, the board also began the meeting intending to consider restoring some compensation increases for staff, including cost-of-living adjustments and a new top pay tier for school staff. However, during the meeting, they were advised that any compensation changes would have to be negotiated with employee unions, regardless of whether those unions have an active contract.
