Alexandria Coronavirus Update: Monthly Trends, ZIP Code Data
Month-to-month counts show May had more new cases than June and July combined.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The coronavirus case trends are looking better in June and July than May for Alexandria, according to the latest local and state health department data. As of Aug. 10, cumulative cases stand at 2,976. There have been 60 total deaths and 278 hospitalizations.
At the start of August, Alexandria's cases stood at 2,811. When we look at month-to-month changes, the number of new cases had been larger in May than June and July. According to the Virginia Department of Health's cumulative totals, 486 new cases were added between July 1 and Aug. 1, 344 new cases were added between June 1 and July 1, and 1,179 cases were added between May 1 and June 1. May's new cases represented more than June and July's new cases combined.
The same trend goes for hospitalizations and deaths. There were 33 new hospitalizations between July 1 and Aug. 1 (270 total on Aug. 1), 45 between June 1 and July 1 (237 total on July 1), and 88 between May 1 and June 1 (192 total on June 1).

As for deaths, two were reported between July 1 and Aug. 1 (59 total on Aug. 1), 12 were reported between June 1 and July 1 (57 total on July 1), and 21 were reported between May 1 and June 1 (45 total on June 1).
Another improvement has been the positive rate of tests. On Aug. 1, the 7-day average of positive tests was 5.4 percent, which is up from the 4 percent average on July 1 but down from the 10.4 percent average on June 1 and 31.9 percent average on May 1.

The latest ZIP code data shows positive rates are down for Alexandria's ZIP codes. As of Aug. 5, the cumulative percent positive rates ranged from 5.6 percent to 20.3 percent; on July 7, the rates ranged from 8.1 percent to 24.6 percent.
