Alexandria Coronavirus Update: Weekly Trend Of Cases, Deaths

We look at the week-by-week changes in new cases, deaths and hospitalizations in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As of Monday, Alexandria has 2,735 cumulative coronavirus cases, 266 hospitalizations and 57 deaths. Although those numbers show the pandemic's overall impact on the city, a closer look at the data trends shows the situation has improved over recent weeks.

We're taking a look at the week-by-week changes in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in Alexandria. Data comes from the Virginia Department of Health's COVID-19 Daily Dashboard, which provides daily numbers of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations under the locality tab.

Looking at week-by-week changes in new cases, Alexandria had notable case increases in April before new cases declined in May and June. The peak — over 300 new cases — happened between the weeks of April 26 and May 3. By mid-June, new cases stabilized with small fluctuations. New weekly cases fell below 100 since mid-June, except for 148 new cases reported between June 19 and 26.

Deaths

Deaths have been in the single digits, or nonexistent, in most weeks. In fact, there were no deaths reported between the weeks of June 28 and July 19 — one death was removed from the city's count during this time. The peak week-to-week change of deaths was 12 between the weeks of April 19 and 26.

While there are cases in every age group in Alexandria, most deaths are in the two oldest age groups. There have been 25 deaths in the 80 and up age group, followed by 18 deaths in the 70 to 79 age group, 11 deaths in the 50 to 59 age group, two in the 60 to 69 age group and one in the 20 to 29 age group.

Like cases, Alexandria's hospitalizations haven't increased much in recent weeks. The trend of new hospitalizations shows increases in April with a peak increase of 38 between the weeks of April 19 and 26. New hospitalizations have been on the decline since late April with small fluctuations.
