Alexandria Farmers Markets Can Operate With Pre-Orders Only
After farmers markets were suspended last weekend, they will be allowed to operate through pre-orders.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — After Alexandria's farmers markets were suspended during the last weekend in relation to the new coronavirus situation, the city will allow them to operate through pre-orders only.
Before Gov. Ralph Northam's latest executive order, he placed restrictions on restaurants, banning more than 10 customers in dine-in areas. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services had interpreted that rule as applying to farmers markets as well, leading the city to close the markets. A few of the markets advertised vendors' pick-up and delivery options during the closure.
The guidance for farmers markets changed with Gov. Ralph Northam's new executive order that took effect at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24. The order named farmers markets as a business that could operate with only take-out or delivery services. On-site dining and congregation areas are not allowed under the order. The governor also banned gatherings of more than 10 people.

Under the city's direction, the Old Town Farmers' Market, Old Town North Farmers' Market, Del Ray Farmers' Market, Four Mile Run Farmers' & Artisans Market and West End Farmers' Market can be open with pickup of pre-ordered food until further notice. The pre-order-only rule is designed to follow the governor's order banning gatherings of more than 10 people.
"Our markets serve as a vital resource for consumers, and City staff have worked hard to keep this food supply available in our community and support market vendors during this extraordinary time," said City Manager Mark Jinks. "As we all make changes in our routines to protect each other, we ask customers to comply with the Governor’s order to practice social distancing and avoid gathering, so market vendors can remain accessible in the weeks ahead."

Vendors may not display food items or samples, and non-food vendors may not provide pick-up. Vendors are encouraged to utilize pre-pay options if possible to reduce touching and avoid lines. Market managers were directed to increase the distance between vendor stands, discourage lines, encourage handwashing and social distancing, and urge customers to exit after picking up orders. There is no evidence of coronavirus spreading through food, but customers should follow FDA guidelines for washing produce.
Vendors who offer pre-orders were asked to provide details to Visit Alexandria's ALXatHome. Available vendors will be listed in the coming days.
