Alexandria High School Celebrates 841 Graduates At 2024 Commencement

Hundreds of graduating Titans are headed to college, trade schools or other paths and will collectively get millions in scholarships.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City High School has 841 new alumni as graduates turned their tassels and started their next chapter at Saturday's commencement at EagleBank Arena at George Mason University.

Alexandria City High School's theme for the 2024 graduation was "Agents of Change," highlighting the senior class's interest in making an impact during their senior experience project. Alexandria City Public Schools staff, leaders, School Board members, City Council members, other dignitaries and community participants were present to witness the latest senior class graduate.

"I am extremely humbled, proud and overjoyed for our Class of 2024 graduates," said Alexandria City High School's Executive Principal Alexander Duncan. "I am also very excited for our Titans. Seeing how much of an impact this group of students want to make, fills me with immense happiness. Witnessing their dedication to creating a positive change and their passion for making a difference is inspiring."

According to ACPS, 622 members of the graduating class reported they applied to a college or university as of May 31. Titans will attend 135 colleges and universities. Of those attending college, 30 athletes signed letters of intent to participate in nine collegiate sports.

Another 19 students have committed to serve in the U.S. military, 21 students plan to take a gap year through Year Up, Americorps, employment or internships. Trade schools to study technical, HVAC, dental assistant, electrical apprenticeship and automotive service trades will be the career path for 19 students.

Nearly half of the graduating class — 427 seniors — received an Advanced Studies Diploma, which is the highest percentage of the high school's senior class to meet the requirements for the advanced degree.

College-bound students are receiving at least $2 million in merit scholarships. The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria provided $644,800 in scholarships to 216 students for their first year of college. Those scholarships can be renewed through their four years of undergraduate study, totaling $2.3303 million. Among the other scholarship providers are the HBCU Week Foundation, Inc., Questbridge College Match, POSSE Foundation, Gates Foundation, Akerson Family Foundation, Beat the Odds Program, Army ROTC, Air Force ROTC, Navy ROTC, Alexandria Sportsman Club, Educational Opportunities for Alexandrians, United Fund, Dell Scholars Program, Amazon Future Engineers, Harry F. Byrd Scholarship Foundation, Alfred Street Baptist Church Foundation, Cooley-Moore Scholarship, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and students' colleges or universities.

Overall, the graduating class was 36 percent Hispanic (all races), 26.7 percent non-Hispanic white, 26.38 percent non-Hispanic Black, 6.1 percent Asian, 2.7 percent multiracial and 2 percent American Indian or Alaska native.
