Alexandria Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby Early Thursday Morning

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- An Alexandria Police officer helped deliver a baby in a car on the side of the road in Alexandria early Thursday morning, according to police.

Alexandria Police Department spokeswoman Crystal Nosal said Thursday morning that Officer Michael Garcia noticed a car driving erratically at about 2 a.m. in the 2800 block of Duke Street (see map below) and pulled it over.
A mother at the wheel, her pregnant daughter in the passenger seat and several children in the backseat were all driving to the hospital with the pregnant daughter in labor.

Less than a minute later, Officer Garcia delivered a baby boy during the traffic stop, Nosal said.
Garcia stopped to visit Mom and baby Joshua at the hospital; both are doing well, Nosal said. Garcia has been on the Alexandria Police force for 3.5 years and this is his first delivery, police said.
