Alexandria School Board Member Abdel Elnoubi Runs For City Council
Abdel Elnoubi, an Alexandria City School Board member with engineering experience, entered the race for Alexandria City Council in 2024.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Abdel Elnoubi, a member of the Alexandria City School Board, is seeking election to Alexandria City Council in 2024.
City Council's six seats are up for election in addition to mayor. Elnoubi, who became the first Muslim/Arab-American elected to the Alexandria City School Board, will run in the Democratic primary.
"I left the other Alexandria—Alexandria, Egypt—for a better life in Alexandria, Virginia, where my wife and I are raising our two precious kids. We are a three-generation family living in a city I am proud to call home," said Elnoubi in a campaign announcement. "Having lived under dictatorship in Egypt, I understand the importance of having elected officials who genuinely care about their community and are accountable to the people who elect them."

Elnoubi is one of three District C representatives on the School Board. He cites accomplishments like advocating for the city to implement 15 mph school zones, budget amendments to hire another high school psychologist and teaching to address overcrowding in classrooms, supporting pay increases for Alexandria City Public Schools staff, and supporting school capacity projects.
"I am excited to continue advocating for our schools on City Council, and bring my 12 years of experience as a transportation professional to take on some of our city’s most pressing needs: a well-resourced education system, transportation and infrastructure resilience, housing affordability, and enhanced public safety," said Elnoubi.

He has an master's degree in engineering management from George Washington University and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from City College of New York. He is a licensed professional engineer and a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Sorensen Institute.
"As an engineer, I am trained to use critical thinking skills to identify and address the root causes of structural issues," said Elnoubi. "I will bring that approach, as well as my experience in transit, infrastructure, budgets, and capital improvement projects to the City Council, especially as our city faces new initiatives like the Potomac Yard entertainment district proposal. On City Council, I will continue to be a voice for our city and strive to find solutions that improve quality of life and affordability so that families, just like mine, can afford to raise their kids here and elderly citizens, just like my parents, can retire comfortably in this wonderful city we all call home."
The primary election in Alexandria is scheduled for June 18, 2024, while the general election will happen on Nov. 5, 2024.
