An elderly Alexandria resident lost tens of thousands of dollars after scammers convinced her that her identity had been stolen.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – An elderly Alexandria resident lost tens of thousands of dollars to a team of scammers this summer, according to a new report.

ALX Now reports that the elderly woman was scammed out of $77,000 by a group of scammers who convinced her that her identity had been stolen and used to create an Amazon account, create fake bank accounts and buy drugs and guns. Starting on June 26, scammers pretended to be representatives from Amazon, Bank of America and the Federal Trade Commission in a days-long con job culminating in the victim withdrawing the bulk of her cash savings with a cashier’s check and sending it to a company in Flushing, NY, at the direction of the fake FTC representative.

According to the outlet, the victim reported the theft to Alexandria police on July 6. No arrests have been made.
