ALX Parking Board Approves 2 Safety Improvement Packages, Rejects 1: Report

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria's Traffic and Parking Board has recommended against adding 11 parking spaces and two loading spaces near Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, rejecting a proposal connected to planned pedestrian-safety improvements along Russell Road, according to a report.

The Alexandria Brief reports that the board voted to advance two other parking and safety initiatives during its Monday meeting.

City staff had proposed adding five parking spaces on the 600 block of Russell Road, along with two spaces that would serve as loading zones for limited hours on weekdays, according to The Alexandria Brief. Another six parking spaces were proposed on the 700 block of Johnston Place.

The board recommended against all of the proposed additions, with members citing public opposition and concerns about the safety of a loading zone during school drop-off, according to the outlet.

The city plans to make safety improvements along Russell Road between West Myrtle and West Maple streets with an eye to reducing vehicle speeds, improving pedestrian crossings and increasing visibility for children and other pedestrians traveling to and from Naomi Brooks Elementary.

The Old Dominion Boulevard Safety Improvements Project and the Dawes Avenue Safety Improvement Project were both advanced by the board.

Director of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services Leah Riley will make the final decision on all projects.
