Another Significant Winter Storm Possible This Weekend In VA, Forecasters Say

As Northern Virginia digs out from last weekend's storm, forecasters say they're watching another system that could be significant.

As Northern Virginia digs out from a major winter storm that passed through the state last weekend, forecasters are warning that another significant storm could impact the eastern United States in the coming days.

"Chances have increased for impactful snow and/or wind along the immediate East Coast, but uncertainty remains rather high with respect to details," the National Weather Service Prediction Center wrote on Tuesday morning. "Be sure to keep checking for updates."

Cold temperatures are expected to persist in the region through the next week. At the same time, a strong surface low-pressure system is expected to rapidly develop off the southeast coast on Saturday and move into the mid-Atlantic states on Sunday.

As the system interacts with the cold air, it could result in widespread, heavy precipitation and gusty winds.

Forecasters say it is still too early to determine specific details about the storm, including track, timing and precipitation amounts.

"How fast the storm strengthens will be a determining factor in the final track of the storm this weekend and whether or not it moves up the East Coast," AccuWeather forecaster Paul Pastelok wrote.

Meanwhile, a cold weather advisory remains in place for most of Northern Virginia until 11 a.m. Tuesday. The advisory will once again go into effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday.

According to forecasters, very cold wind chills as low as 3 to 8 degrees below zero are expected overnight Tuesday. This could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken, officials said.

The new forecast comes just hours after the D.C. region recorded multiple inches of snow in the worst storm to hit the state in 10 years. See snowfall totals.
