Day-Long Barricade Ends As Suspect Surrenders In Alexandria

Alexandria Police say a suspect surrendered after a barricade and firing shots at officers at one point.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As of 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, the barricade situation in Alexandria has been resolved more than a day later, according to the police department. The suspect surrendered without incident, police said.

Alexandria Police first responded to a report of shots fired during a road rage incident. Police located the suspect in his home in the 1000 block of Woods Place. Around 12 p.m., police tried to arrest the suspect, but he refused to surrender and barricaded himself in the home.

The standoff has continued through the night into Wednesday morning. At one point in the standoff, the suspect fired shots at officers, according to police. No officers fired their weapons, and no injuries were reported.

"Alexandria Police Department will make every effort to end this peacefully," stated Don Hayes, the acting chief of police. "I am proud of all the officers involved including the support officers from Fairfax County and the patience all the officers involved have exhibited."

The incident happened close to Alexandria City High School. School operations are not impacted due to schools being closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Police have not publicly identified the suspect.
