ALEXANDRIA, VA — If you're not a fan of the chaos that is Black Friday at big box stores, Alexandria has an alternative to start the holiday shopping seasons. Over 40 independently-owned businesses will have deals and activities for Black Friday (Nov. 29) and Small Business Saturday (Nov. 30).

On Black Friday, expect special discounts throughout the day and select stores opening by 7 a.m. Returning for the second year is Old Town Business and Old Town Boutique District's Plaid Friday, which promotes local businesses as an alternative to big box stores' Black Friday. Shoppers wearing plaid can receive a gift card, and anyone can get free gift-wrapping outside Izalia Spa with a $50 purchase from participating retailers and score a limited-edition tote with a purchase of $100 or more. Participating businesses will display a Plaid Friday poster.

Small Business Saturday activities will include local author and designer appearances, special discounts, free treats, hands-on activities and free gifts with purchase. New this year is Caroling & Candy Canes from the Alexandria Arts Alliance at the Alexandria Visitor Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Shoppers can also participate in the new Small Business Saturday Scavenger Hunt from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fill out the scavenger hunt map at participating stores and restaurants and score deals at each location. A map stamped 10 times enters you to win a grand prize.
