One of Old Town’s most beloved traditions, the Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week Tour, ushers in the spring season on April 18 with a walking tour of five historic homes and gardens in Alexandria’s southeast quadrant.Now in its 97th year, the tour is managed by two local garden clubs, Hunting Creek Garden Club and the Garden Club of Alexandria, which alternate responsibility for organizing the event.Tickets also include access to two Garden Club of Virginia restoration projects: George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and Green Spring Gardens.Proceeds from the tour go towards the Garden Club of Virginia’s commitment to preserving historic public gardens and landscapes.
This year’s tour highlights five historic properties owned by residents dedicated to preserving each home.Each offers a glimpse into Alexandria’s storied past, revealing the fascinating histories of its occupants. 
The tour will be open to the public on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., showcasing some of Alexandria’s finest historic residences, carefully preserved and thoughtfully updated while remaining true to the era in which they were built.“We are grateful to each homeowner for graciously opening their homes so tourgoers have the opportunity to experience the history, architecture, interiors, and gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries,” tour chairs, Betsy Regnell and Maureen Bates, said.
Tickets may be purchased online at https://<a href="https://www.gcvirginia.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.gcvirginia.org</a>&nbsp;for $55 each.Advance tickets are available for $55 at the Alexandria Visitor’s Center, 221 King Street, and $65 on tour day.Complimentary refreshments will be available at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 228 South Pitt Street, from 11:30 to 2 p.m.

“Mrs. House has the most commodious Rooms: The Experience of Boarding in Late-Eighteenth Century America”

Travelers in early America faced daunting challenges: poor roads, storms at sea, long distances between towns and settlements, and, not least of all, uncertain lodgings. Options for accommodation included taverns, inns, and boarding houses. A traveler often would not know how many people were expected to share a room, if the sheets would be clean, or what they would be served for dinner until arrival. Some experiences were pleasant. Others, not so much.
Unlike purpose-built taverns and inns, boarding houses usually started as homes. As businesses situated in domestic, often feminine, environments, boarding houses were dynamic, complicated, volatile little worlds. Their physical spaces, the objects that filled them, and the ways that people engaged with them were closely tied to gender and enslavement and adapted as business grew or shrank. Using boarding houses Thomas Jefferson patronized in Philadelphia and Newport in the 1780s and 1790s as case studies, this talk explores the physical spaces of boarding, the furniture and material culture that made for successful (or unsuccessful) boarding experiences, and the activities that took place within the confines of a house transformed into a business. Emilie Johnson is the Curator of Arts and History at Monticello. Current projects include the restoration and reinstallation of the Tea Room at Monticello and exhibitions that explore Jefferson’s political activities and personal life in the heady but uncertain months of 1776. She holds a Ph.D. in Art and Architectural History from the University of Virginia. Her scholarship, lectures, and publications focus on American art, architecture, and material culture of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries.
