Celebrate Pride Month 2022 In Alexandria With These Events

Pride Month events in June will kick off with the annual Celebrate Alexandria Pride.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — June is Pride month and events celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community kick off this week.

The Human Rights Campaign gave Alexandria a perfect score on its 2021 Municipality Equality Index for LGBTQ+ equality. The City of Alexandria typically celebrates with events as well as displaying the Progress Pride Flag outside City Hall throughout June. Alexandria is also close to DC where Capital Pride events will be happening all month long.

Festivities kick off with the Celebrate Alexandria Pride Event Saturday, and Growing Pride at The Garden will return for a second year later in June.

5th Annual Celebrate Alexandria Pride Event: June 4, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St., Alexandria, VA

The Alexandria LGBTQ+ Task Force will host its 5th Annual Celebrate Alexandria Pride Event at the Charles Houston Recreation Center. This event coincides with Alexandria Library is “Drag Queen Story Time with Venus” at 2 p.m. for children ages 3 to 8. Enjoy spoken word with C. Thomas at 3 p.m. Collect Pride swag, enjoy music and food, make some art, pose for a Pride pic, and learn about LGBTQ-inclusive services in Alexandria. Free and confidential HIV testing will be available.

Drag Brunch at King & Rye: June 4, 11 a.m. for brunch and show from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission: $45 per person

Enjoy a Southern brunch featuring the DMV’s best drag entertainment. See a fierce lineup of queens including Jayzeer Shantey, Amber St. Lexington, Dabatha Christie and more. The show includes one 10-minute intermission. Tickets include a choice of entrée from the brunch menu and juice bar; just add a bottle of champagne to make it a DIY mimosa bar.

Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap will offer a new specialty cocktail, the Stormé Spark, during Pride Month. This refreshingly spicy cocktail of Republic Restoratives Chapman’s Apple Brandy, watermelon shrub, simple syrup, club soda and a savory habanero rim was created in honor of Stormé DeLarverie, a civil rights icon who had a scuffle with police outside the Stonewall Inn in 1969, which sparked the Stonewall Riots. Lena's will donate $1 from each cocktail ordered to Safe Space NOVA who provides a safe, accepting and supportive environment to local LGBTQ+ youth.

The Late Shift: ALX Pride at the Torpedo Factory Art Center: June 10, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

ALX Pride is a community-focused event to celebrate LGBTQ+ creatives in Alexandria and beyond with a night of arts projects along the waterfront and the Union Street entrances and throughout the building.

Make Your Own Pride Patches: June 21, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Barrett Branch Library, 717 Queen St., Alexandria, VA

Teens are invited to come to the Barrett Branch Library to make a LGBTQIA+ Pride patch that can be added to their jacket, your backpack or anything else. Make a patch in one of four styles for yourself and for friends. Attendees are advised to wear clothing they don't mind getting ruined. Weather permitting, the workshop will take place outside. Otherwise, it will take place on the second floor of the library. Register to get the most up to date information. The event is open to all teens ages 12 to 18. Create Tie-Dye Pride Tote Bags: June 22, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Beatley Central Library, 5005 Duke St., Alexandria, VA

Create a tie-dye Pride tote bag using permanent markers and rubbing alcohol. All materials will be provided, but you may bring additional items to tie-dye if desired. The event is for teens and adults. Registration is required. This event is scheduled to take place in the Frank and Betty Wright Reading Garden, but in case of inclement weather, it will be moved indoors.

Growing Pride at The Garden: June 26, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Garden at Building Momentum, 5380 Eisenhower Ave. Suite C, Alexandria, VA

Growing Pride at The Garden returns for a second year celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride. This family-friendly event is Alexandria’s largest Pride celebration, featuring 15 local LGBTQ+ makers and allies, local food trucks, live music and crafting at Building Momentum’s The Garden ALX.
