The Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Alexandria remain under states of emergency in the aftermath of this historic winter storm, the City said in a news release Monday night.
The city received 50 percent more snow in about 36 hours than it usually receives in an entire year. Travel is still dangerous, and drivers should use extreme caution and expect delays. The City urges everyone to stay home and off the roads if possible, to allow our crews to work safely and effectively.

The City asks residents: “Please do not walk in the street or place objects in the street. This is extremely dangerous, since plow operators often have blind spots with oversized equipment. Snow plows are encountering hundreds of delays as they wait for people to get out of the way. We are working as quickly as we safely can to reach all streets.”
As of Monday at 7 p.m.:
- 100 percent of primary routes are passable for emergency vehicles
- 90 percent of secondary routes are passable
- 45 percent of residential streets are passable
“Passable” streets may have only one lane and may not be cleared curb-to-curb depending on volume of snow, parked vehicles, and equipment needs. There are approximately 80 snow trucks in operation around the city, and we ask for everyone’s patience over the next few days as crews work as quickly as possible to reach all streets.
Check SnowReport to see routes and status. SnowReport is intended to take reports of streets that have been missed after the applicable level (primary, secondary, residential) has been completed. It does not take reports for levels not yet completed.
Because this was a Level 3 storm, residential roads will not be clear for several days from the end of the storm. We expect to reach all streets by Tuesday night. Take time to check on neighbors and friends who may need assistance.
