City Hall Renovation Project Prompts Road Closures For Pre-Construction Work

A road closure and lane shift will be in place for several days as the city prepares to renovate City Hall and Market Square.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City Hall and Market Square renovation project will prompt upcoming road closures in Old Town Alexandria, the city government says.

On Nov. 10 to 13, North Royal Street will be closed to all traffic between Cameron Street and King Street. The closure starts at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10 and continues until 7 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. Drivers will be detoured to North Pitt Street and North Fairfax Street. Detour signs will be posted.

On Nov. 13 to 20, there will be a lane shift on North Royal Street between Cameron Street and King Street. The lane shift begins on 7 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, through Thursday, Nov. 20. Drivers should look for signs and prepare for delays. No parking will be allowed on North Royal Street between Cameron and King Streets from Nov. 13 to 20.

The closures are due to investigation and testing work for the upcoming renovation project. Some city services started relocating out of City Hall ahead of the renovation project over the summer into the fall. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and last about two years.
