Crash Into Storefront Temporarily Closes Old Town Gelato Shop

Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato was the site of a crash into the building early Wednesday, according to police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A car crash into an Old Town Alexandria gelato shop early Wednesday prompted the business to temporarily close.

A police spokesperson said officers responded to the crash around 12:30 a.m. in the 100 block of South Payne Street, the location of Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato. The driver, a 42-year-old man, remained on the scene and was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

The shop is a family-owned business from Benjamin and Raquel Umansky specializing in Argentine gelato and sorbet. The owners shared photos of the building damaged by the crash. Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato will be closed temporarily as they work with the city and other authorities on repairs and approval to reopen.

ALX Now reported other crashes into buildings in recent days, including a vehicle crashed into the Del Ray CVS during an attempted ATM theft and an apparent accidental crash into Robcyns at the Bradlee Shopping Center.
