Duke Street Bridge Over I-395 Project Completed In Alexandria

VDOT says its bridge rehabilitation project over Interstate 395 has been finished ahead of schedule and includes a new shared-use path.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Drivers will notice less of a road work presence in the Duke Street corridor near I-395. The Duke Street bridge over Interstate 395 project in Alexandria has been completed, the Virginia Department of Transportation said Friday.

The project, which began in summer 2021, replaced the concrete bridge deck and beams, turned the westbound sidewalk into a shared-use path, and widened the eastbound sidewalk. In August 2022. The Duke Street concrete roadway was also repaired just east and west of I-395 in summer 2022.

The goal of the project was to extend the life of the bridge and improve safety and pedestrian mobility, according to VDOT. An estimated 47,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day.

The $16.4 million project was funded with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funds for bridges and pavement.

Although the road work is completed, the area will still see major construction in the coming years due to the Landmark Mall redevelopment.
