My guess is that many of you have driven past Blue and White Carry Out countless times, still none the wiser. That's because Blue and White is tiny and close to invisible if you're driving south through Old Town on Route 1 during the evening hours. A more casual drive-by during the lunch hour might have left you wondering about that really little white and blue shack with the line of patrons stretching out the door and down the street.
So what are those folks waiting for? Here's what: Southern style cooking with a menu where not one item exceeds the price of $5. They are waiting for Blue and White's one-of-a-kind fried chicken (a recipe from the current owner's uncle) and the popular pork chop sandwich or sweet potato pie.
Blue and White keeps them coming by serving consistently good, hearty Southern food with little damage to the wallet. Expect to find a variety of breakfast items, from fried eggs and cheese to home fries and half-smokes. Lunch options range from liver sandwiches to a fried chicken sandwich that is served with the bone and nestled inside two slices of white bread. You can't go wrong with one of the pork chop dinners (with your choice of two sides and two slices of white bread) or the fried chicken dinner drenched in hot sauce. Southern sides include bean soup, collard greens, mashed potatoes, chicken and rice, and corn.

No one available during my visit knew the exact history behind the store, but the store manager, Candida ("Candy") says the place has been around for 80 years. And whatever they've been doing at Blue and White Carry Out for eight decades is working. The spot has become an Old Town institution over the years. Its clientele still draws from the local community and offers out-of-towners in search of honest soul food an inexpensive treat.
Blue and White is located at 1024 Wythe Street and is open Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cash only.
