Extreme Heat, Humidity To Target NoVA: Latest Weekend Forecast

High temperatures and heat index values could reach triple digits this weekend, marking a sweltering start to summer in Virginia.

VIRGINIA — Summer will get off to a boiling start in Northern Virginia this weekend with high temperatures expected to reach the mid- to upper 90s and a few spots likely to hit 100 degrees, according to the latest forecast.

Thursday marks the first official day of summer. Conditions will remain dry throughout the day with temperatures forecast to reach the upper 80s to lower 90s, the National Weather Service said in its latest forecast.

Temperatures and heat index values are expected to climb throughout the area by Friday, forecasters said.

While humidity remains moderate on Thursday and Friday, that will change on Saturday, forecasters said.

"Humidity creeps up to add to the pain (dew points around 70), producing heat indexes over 105," the Capital Weather Gang said in its latest forecast. "Plenty of sun and a lack of wind will have many seeking cooling relief."

Anyone planning a trip to the Jersey Shore or Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, might want to think again. An excessive heat watch will be in effect Sunday for those beaches, plus northeast Maryland, the NWS said, with heat index values up to 110 degrees possible. It includes: Kent, Queen Annes, Talbot, and Caroline counties in Maryland.

The heat should reach its peak on Sunday. Some spots could see temperatures reach 100 degrees, forecasters said.

"Again, highs in the mid- to upper 90s will be most common, but some spots could hit or even exceed 100, breaking records," the Capital Weather Gang said. "At least there should be more clouds popping up to offer a bit of shade."
